Scandinavian Cup, Hvervenbukta, Oslo 19-20. june 2004

Very variable & very unpredictable weather conditions during the whole weekend. At least we got some dry qualification heats. And most of the final in 1:8 Track was also dry. The attendance for this race was very poor for the 1:8 Track class. 235mm is totally dead in Scandinavia now. And 1:8 is struggeling. It seems like everybody wants to compete in the 200mm class.

QUALIFYING RESULTS 1:8 TRACK (5 fastest consecutive laps):
1) avg. 13.85 - Ytternes - Slide
2) avg. 14.08 - Berntsen - Mugen
3) avg. 14.10 - Andersen - Serpent
4) avg. 14.27 - Haugen - Mugen
5) avg. 14.60 - Magnussen - Slide

Ytternes built up a comfortable lead after the start. Then made a mistake which put Haugen in the lead. But shortly after also he made a mistake, and Ytternes took over the lead. After being slightly faster and also due to more mistakes by Haugen, Ytternes had with 5 minutes left a 3 lap lead. Ytternes then stripped his front belt, but was still able to keep a good enough pace to finish first. Then his receiver battery back went empty with 2 minutes to go... Still, a very strong & steady race by Lars Haugen, and a very well deserved first ever R/C car race win for a guy who has been among the best for a long time now.

FINAL RESULTS:
1) Lars Haugen - Mugen/NR/GRP
2) Svein Harald Ytternes - Slide/JP/GP Speed Tires
3) Kjeld Holmsen - Slide/Sirio/GP Speed Tires
4) Kim Nygård Jørgensen - Slide/NR/GP Speed Tires
5) Johnny Magnussen - Slide/RB/GP Speed Tires

6) Stig Berntsen - Mugen/JP/GRP
7) Frank Andersen - Serpent/NovaMega/GRP

This is the first time in Scandinavia that SMP is the dominant brand in a race:
57% Slide
29% Mugen
14% Serpent

FASTEST LAPTIMES IN THE FINAL:
1) 13.79 - Ytternes - Slide
2) 14.01 - Haugen - Mugen
3) 14.32 - Magnussen - Slide
4) 14.55 - Nygård Jørgensen - Slide
5) 15.04 - Kjeld Holmsen - Slide

Sune Cup, Hvervenbukta, Oslo, 1. june 2004

A well deserved win for Stig Bertsen with his MRX-3. After all these years he finally got his first victory! Lars Haugen, also with a MRX-3, finished in 2nd position, very close to Stig. The only Slide driver in the final, Johnny Magnussen, was in a solid 3rd position until he stripped his rear belt and had to settle for 5th place. Nonetheless a very good effort, and his laptimes were also very good. Here are the best laptimes from the final:

13.27 Knut Eriksen - Serpent (no. 4 in the EC-A in 2003)
13.74 Stig Berntsen - Mugen
13.78 Lars Haugen - Mugen
13.81 Johnny Magnussen - Slide

Norwegian Championship 2003

Ytternes (Slide/JP/Enneti) qualified 2nd behind Knut Eriksen. Eriksen, who finished 4th in the EC-A in Oslo in 2003, is hard to beat on his home track. In the race Ytternes was 1 lap down after 10 minutes, and was trying to unlap himself from Eriksen. Then the closing valve between the exhaust and tank got blocked by dirt. And after that it was impossible to get the engine to run well. Which meant many extra pit-stops, some broken plugs and lots of laps lost. In the end Ytternes finished 4th.

Fastest laptimes saturday/qualifying:
1. Ytternes (Slide/JP/Enneti): 13.29
2. Eriksen (Serpent/RB/Ellegi): 13.30

Fastest laptimes sunday/finals:
1. Eriksen (Serpent/RB/Ellegi): 13.11
2. Ytternes (Slide/JP/Enneti): 13.13

Norwegian Championship 2002

Knut Eriksen (Serpent/RB/Ellegi) and Ytternes (Slide/JP/GP Speed Tires) were in a class of their own in the main final. And just before the 1st pit stop Ytternes was on Eriksen tail, controlling the small distance. Just waiting there as he knew Eriksen would have to do a tire-change mid-way, while Ytternes could finish on one set of tires. But for reasons unknown Ytternes car went dry at 4:30. Which cost a lot of time. He managed to get back but it also flamed out at the next stop and the plug broke. This cost 7 laps, and he was then all the way down in 7th position. He did a very hard recovery drive, to make the podium and 3rd place in the final minute! Kjølstad won the race in front of Eriksen. Without the 7 laps lost Ytternes would have had the potential to win with a 2-3 laps lead, but that's not worth much regrettably!

Fastest laptimes sunday/finals:
1. Ytternes (Slide/JP/Enneti): 12.98
2. Eriksen (Serpent/RB/Ellegi): 13.06
3. Per-Henrik Kjølstad (Serpent/Mega/Ellegi): 13.30
The rest of the drivers were above the 13.50 marker.

Nordic Championship 2002 Stockholm, Sweden

1. Mikael Fransson (S) Serpent
7. Svein Harald Ytternes (N) Slide/JP/GP Speed Tires

Ytternes was in 4th position, fighting for 3rd when his throttle servo started to malfunction. Which forced him to back off and loose several positions. Ytternes was the only non-swede in the final.

1-2-4 for SMP Racing Engineering in GP Lostallo, Switzerland 2001

SMP driver Oliver Mack of Germany has won the latest EFRA Gp in Lostallo, Switzerland. Michael Salven had put his car on the pole spot but had his engine stop in the final and had to fight back to regain the third position on this ultra big track. The track is a "multi-track". For 1:8 the track layout gives a total length of 403 (!!!) metres. Markus Geisendorf on his home track took the 2nd position with Roger Sahli in 4th. This was the big guns' last warmup before next months World Championships in Australia. There was a high level of competition, with drivers such as current world champion Adrien Bertin, Franck Bestel, Van Gestel and Solaroli.

The enormous track inbetween the swiss mountains. Geisendorfs playground!

Three happy fast guys! A very well deserved win to Knut "Collari" Eriksen!

Report:
27 drivers in total showed up. It must be many years since we last saw so many participants. The weather was perfect with 25 degrees and sunshine. The grip was awesome. My setup was with blue MED springs and 90 degrees stabilizer in the rear(!). Many drivers experienced traction rolling. The TQ and winner, Knut Eriksen, was in a class of his own. He was always a couple of tenths quicker per round. He has practised several times a week at this track for a couple of seasons - so he is really the local hotshot. Last years lap record of 13:80 was pulverized this year after the resurfacing of the track. Knut Eriksen managed 12:99. My fastest lap was 13:16. A victory for Knut and Kyosho that is well deserved! Congratulations! Last years winner, Frank Andersen, never got up to speed with his Veteq and had to settle for 5th place in qualifying and 9th place in the final. His brother Øyvind did not show up at all. I really wonder if we will see him race again, as he has not participated in one single race this year. In general it also looks like it is only the top european drivers who are able to turn out any significant potential from the Veteq, as most experienced drivers in Scandinavia one after one are going back to the Vector. And instantly being quicker.

As to newcomers Tormod Ovesen finished in 5th place in his first ever 1:8 track race. Simply stunning! But he is a hotshot in the 1:8 OR scene, still... Also Terje Holm finished in a strong 6th place in his first season with 1:8 track. He has previous experience from 1:10 track. The same goes for Per Espen Knudsen, who finished in 7th place, also a SMP driver. He rarely gets to practise, so he really has a lot of unused potential. Good old Amlien finished in a strong 4th place. With an old car and very little practise. All in all - a weekend of some very strong driving from a huge amount of racers. The level of competitiveness for this class has for sure increased in Norway. Frank Andersen, who has been dominating for many years, was not able to qualify directly for the final. That says a lot about how much the general level has increased!

Statistics:
How is the team effort? I've played around a little with statistics. Let's say that last finish gives 1 point and first place gets 27 points. The "constructors championship" would then be:

1 Serpent 116 points 9 cars
2 SMP 105 points 7 cars
3 Kyosho 83 points 6 cars
4 Picco 66 points 4 cars
5 Jin Feng 8 points 1 car

As you can see, Serpent is still on top after many years of almost monopoly in Norway. But they also had more cars this time, so how well did they do as a whole team? If we divide the total points on the number of cars for each team, this is the result:

1 Picco 16,5 points
2 SMP 15,0 points
3 Kyosho 13,8 points
4 Serpent 12,9 points
5 Jin Feng 8,0 points

This shows that the best team effort was done bye the "old Picco boys" with their good old Picco cars. They know their cars very well and they helped each other to find a good set-up. On the contrary the Serpent team were strong in numbers, but falls somewhat through as to getting every single driver to perform well, even though they collected the most points in total. And SMP? 2-2-2... seems to be the melody...

Report :
Already during training there were problems with the new 3 chamber muffler.

Salven TQ'ed with his Veteq, 0.3 second in front of nr. 2 Oliver Mack with his Slide.

In the final Oliver's engine flamed out due to the problems with the new muffler, and he therefore could not get a better result than third. Salven lead the race for 15 minutes, until he crashed into a backmarker who had spun in front of him. Mack drove the fastest lap times in the final, even if this very bumby track not is a "Slide-track" (It is a car built for fast and flat race tracks). The winner was Aygon with his Mugen, in front of Chaussard with Kyosho. As opposed to Mack, both these drivers did the final without a tire change.

Report from the final:

Michael Salven took an earlylead, and pulled away some 4-5 seconds from Adrian Bertin, who had a bad start, and Christophe Aygon in third. Burch went from 10th to 4th in just a few laps but then crashed his car in the fast sweeper, after that the car wasn't the same. The race went with pitstops, and up until the 25 minute mark, the difference stayed the same with Bertin. Michael came in for fuel, and under braking his car pulled to the right, he hit the pitlane-wall and lost the rear suspension. Michael was out and obviously very disappoited. Before half way, Collari moved into 3rd, after young Ielasi had dropped back because he had a 2-tyre-change strategy, changing at 20 and 40 minutes. Tire changes went without problems, and at the second half of the final Ielasi and Fantini decided it was time to attack. They both drove the best they could, passed both Aygon and Collari, unlapped themselves to finish within a lap of the new World Champion Adrian Bertin. Cyrul, Green and Kaiser all had little incidents on the track and just had to try to bring their cars home.

Mack wins Wiesbaden, Salven 1 second down

Wiesbaden Germany, June 13, 1999

Oliver Mack has taken victory at the 4th round of the Central German championship series in Wiesbaden. Mack also took pole. Michael Salven struggled all weekend, not getting his act together, or better not getting his car straightened out. Small problems chased him all weekend, scoring only a 4th place in qualifying after having to rebuild his car due to a curb-stone flyer into the fence. In the final Michaels engine stalled right at the starting line, loosing 1 1/2 lap on Mack immediately. Some fast pitstops brought him back till 1 second behind Mack at the finish line for second place.

Italian Champion Massimo Fantini (Vector / Nova Rossi) has won the last Grand Prix of the season, the first ever Indoor EFRA GP of Leipzig. Early leader Michael Salven ran out of tires and crashed his car. Alexander Kaiser and Roger Sahli finsihed 2nd and 3rd with their SMP Slides.

Track conditions turned out to be very difficult for everybody, as the organisers of the Leipzig indoor race did not apply enough sand in the paint in order to reduce tire-wear somewhat. Now traction was rather low and tire selection was very critical. Michael Salven, the master of chassis set-up mastered the conditions the best of all and took pole with the only 18 lapper of the day. Michael used the new innovative 4-step adjustable shocks for the very first time, and obviously they worked great. These new revolutionairy shocks are one of the new '99 Spec features of the Vector. Michael Fransson from Sweden qualified his R&B powered Vector in 2nd place, German Alexander Kaiser placed his Swiss SMP Slide in 3rd, and Italian Stefano Colombini put his Nova Rossi powered Vector in 4th.

June 28, 1998, Melzo, Italy

Alexander Kaiser from Germany has won his and SMP's first EFRA Grand Prix. Rody Roem finished second with his R&B powered Vector, and Swiss Roger Sahli finished third making it a 1-3 podium for the Swiss made car. Pole was for young Daniele Ielasi, but in the final he ran into engine trouble. Racing conditions were very tough with temperatures hitting 34 degrees in the afternoon.

Michael Salven wins third round in Mid-German series

Ettlingen, Germany, June 7, 1998

Michael Salven took revanche on team-mate Oliver Mack, winning at the fast Ettlingen track near Karlsruhe. The order was turned around, with Mack now second and Kaiser with his SMP again a strong 3rd. Michael was very pleased with his Mega power this time, especially at top-end he seemed to have a little edge over Oliver Mack's REX engine.

Oliver Mack wins second round in Mid-German series

Kirchain, Germany, May 31, 1998

TQ Michael Salven lost valuable 7 seconds early in the race, to finish only 3 seconds behind Oliver Mack at the end of the final. Mack sustained Salven's pressure and didn't crack. Alexander Kaiser drove a strong final but after an early lead he dropped back, finishing 3rd with his SMP Slide 1 lap down on the leading Vectors.
